A couple of books were recommended to me by a therapist friend. I'm in the midst of one AUGUST by Judith Rossner. A bit outdated (I think it's from the 70s) and boring at times, but interesting to read about the therapeutic relationship.
I've read a few others (mainly by Yalom). Anyone have other suggestions of fiction books dealing with the therapeutic relationship?
Ho hum. I like the one about the boy (Dibs in search of self) but won't help you much with adult therapy!
ReplyDeleteI read the book August when it came out, long time ago, and much of it stayed with me, especially her life and what she went through. It reminds me a lot of In Treatment. The other ones I have read are mostly non-fiction. Have you ever read I Never Promised You a Rose Garden? My recall is that it deals with a teenage girl who is in a mental institution.

Kate - I read Rose Garden a long time ago - junior high or high school. I'm always interested in books that have some of the therapy relationship highlighted - that's what I struggle with. I watched the first two seasons of In Treatment - haven't finished the third season yet. For some reason, I didn't find it as engaging this year.
ReplyDeleteHope you are well,

Hi OLJ,
ReplyDeleteI am doing well. Yeah, year three was not something I bothered with seeing, yet.
There are some good non-fiction therapy books out there, if you are ever interested in that. One that really was great, I thought, was "When You're Ready" written by "Kathe Everet" and her therapist, Inie Bijkerk.
Good and healing thoughts to you.
Kate
I don't know if you're still looking for these kinds of books, but you might also like "Sybil" and "The Three Faces of Eve," and "Ordinary People." Actually, I think the movie "Ordinary People" was better than the book--isn't that a switch! But if you haven't seen the movie, you should watch it. The therapy scenes are really good.
