Fiction books about therapy

A couple of books were recommended to me by a therapist friend. I'm in the midst of one AUGUST by Judith Rossner. A bit outdated (I think it's from the 70s) and boring at times, but interesting to read about the therapeutic relationship.

I've read a few others (mainly by Yalom). Anyone have other suggestions of fiction books dealing with the therapeutic relationship?

  1. Ho hum. I like the one about the boy (Dibs in search of self) but won't help you much with adult therapy!

  2. I read the book August when it came out, long time ago, and much of it stayed with me, especially her life and what she went through. It reminds me a lot of In Treatment. The other ones I have read are mostly non-fiction. Have you ever read I Never Promised You a Rose Garden? My recall is that it deals with a teenage girl who is in a mental institution.

  3. Kate - I read Rose Garden a long time ago - junior high or high school. I'm always interested in books that have some of the therapy relationship highlighted - that's what I struggle with. I watched the first two seasons of In Treatment - haven't finished the third season yet. For some reason, I didn't find it as engaging this year.

    Hope you are well,

  4. Hi OLJ,

I am doing well. Yeah, year three was not something I bothered with seeing, yet.

There are some good non-fiction therapy books out there, if you are ever interested in that. One that really was great, I thought, was "When You're Ready" written by "Kathe Everet" and her therapist, Inie Bijkerk.

Good and healing thoughts to you.

  5. I don't know if you're still looking for these kinds of books, but you might also like "Sybil" and "The Three Faces of Eve," and "Ordinary People." Actually, I think the movie "Ordinary People" was better than the book--isn't that a switch! But if you haven't seen the movie, you should watch it. The therapy scenes are really good.
